The cost of refining oil into gasoline is a tiny cost of what you pay at the pump. The labor portion of refining costs is equally small. In fact, out of every 2,000 gallons of gas you buy, about 50 cents goes to refinery labor. But even that is more than the oil companies want to spend. The companies have been cutting staff and deferring maintenance to the point that refineries are increasingly dangerous for workers and surrounding communities. The United Steelworkers represent the workers and they mainly want a safe place to work and restored staffing levels. Is that too much to ask?
